It can be challenging for a parent to open up a conversation with any youth about behavior issues, but it can be especially difficult for a parent of a youth who has experienced trauma. This course, developed for parents of teens, explores how they can use motivational interviewing techniques to help build trust with the youth in their home, engage them in conversation, and encourage behavior change.
At the end of this course, you will be able to:
- understand how to build trust with youth
- describe the three components of motivational interviewing
- understand how to use the OARS skills of open-ended questions, affirmations, reflections, and summaries
- recognize change talk
